Practice Index seeks to support artists and small arts institutions in preserving the value of their work through practical, sustainable archival strategies.

Artists and small arts organizations collectively make unquantifiable contributions to culture and community. The documents they generate, however, are uniquely susceptible to loss due to the inability to budget finances or time towards sustainable recordkeeping.

Practice Index emerged from identifying a worryingly common need for meaningful, actionable archival services that are directly responsive to the specific concerns of cultural producers. By working foremost within the arts, Practice Index aims to gather relevant resources across individual practices to distribute that information and expertise more equitably.

While urgent preservation needs are inevitable, Practice Index makes recommendations that always prioritize long-term sustainability and self-sufficiency that accounts for different levels of capacity and varying ideals.
